Join the Gunn Memorial Library for a book discussion of this acclaimed novel, where magical realism meets profound philosophical reflection. Together, we’ll explore Ozeki’s unforgettable characters, her insights into our relationship with possessions and the natural world, and the timeless questions she raises about loss, resilience, and finding one’s own voice.

One year after the death of his beloved musician father, thirteen-year-old Benny Oh begins hearing voices—not from people, but from the objects around him. A sneaker, a broken Christmas ornament, even a wilted piece of lettuce all seem to speak, expressing emotions that Benny cannot ignore. As his mother’s growing hoarding compulsion fills their home with more possessions, the voices become increasingly overwhelming.

Searching for peace, Benny finds refuge in a public library, where objects know to whisper. There he meets an eclectic cast of characters, including a talented street artist, a homeless philosopher-poet, and, most remarkably, his own Book—a talking companion that narrates Benny’s story and helps him make sense of grief, love, and the world around him.

In The Book of Form and Emptiness, Ruth Ozeki combines magical realism with warmth, humor, and philosophical insight. Exploring loss, family, consumerism, and the healing power of stories, this inventive and compassionate novel reminds readers that sometimes the quietest voices have the most important truths to share.

All are welcome to share their thoughts and enjoy a conversation.
